Field
Service Without Removal From The Engine
-
The interior
of the air motor of the model 400-HB can be
exposed for cleaning and rotor vane (item 13)
replacement without removing the starter from the
engine.
-
Remove six
end plate bolts (item 17). Then insert two of
these bolts into the threaded holes in the end
plate for use as a "puller".
-
Remove the
end plate by progressively tightening the two
bolts until the end plate is free to remove by
hand.
-
Inspect for
dirty parts, rust, foreign objects, vane wear, and
freedom of rotation. Rotation will not occur if
the starter pinion has engagement with the
flywheel ring gear. It may be necessary to remove
the starter from the engine if this condition
exists.
-
Clean all
exposed parts and replace the rotor vanes (item
13) as necessary.
Disassembly
and Assembly
-
Before
disassembly, mark the mating surfaces of the
housings. During reassembly, align the housings to
these marks.
Refer to the
exploded view for disassembly and assembly.
Assemble the parts in the directions and relative
positions as shown.
Note: The directions of the rotor housing (item
10), rotor sleeve (item 11), and two rotor housing
gaskets (item 9) are shown for standard right had
rotation starters. For left hand rotation
starters, the directions of these four parts are
opposite from the exploded view.
-
Lubricate
the gears (items 7, 27), thrust washer (item 28),
and pilot bearings (items 22, 36) with Texaco
Multipurpose 2 grease or equal.
Installation
Refer to PSI
Bulletin Number STR-04.
